Clive Gray is Professor and Chair, Division of Immunology in the Department of Pathology and Director of the Laboratory for Tissue Immunology at the NHLS/Groot Schuur Hospital labs. He is a full member at the Institute of Infectious Diseases and Molecular Medicine at UCT and an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Immunology, Duke University, North Carolina, USA. He graduated with an MSc and PhD from the University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa and spent 3 years as a post-doc fellow at Stanford University, Center for AIDS Research. In 2004, received the International Leadership Award from the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation, enabling him to start the on-line immunology learning web-site Immunopaedia (www.immunopaedia.org.za), which is now the official International Union of Immunology Societies (IUIS) education on-line learning site. His research interests focus on a) immune regulation and T cell activation within mucosal and epithelial surfaces and the risk of HIV infection and b) immune ontogeny in HIV exposed uninfected newborn infants and how HIV infection on mothers on ARV treatment impacts on fetal-maternal tolerance. He will be the co-Chair of the 18th IUIS International Conference on Immunology in 2022, to be held in Cape Town.
