Stipan Jonjic is Professor and Chair at the Department of Histology and Embryology and Center for Proteomics at the Faculty of Medicine University of Rijeka, Croatia. The focus of his research is immune response to cytomegalovirus (CMV) and pathogenesis of congenital CMV infection in CNS. His work is most recognized by characterization of numerous immunoevasion mechanisms encoded by CMV. He worked as a principal investigator on numerous national and international scientific projects, including EU ERC Advanced Grant and US NIH R01 grant. He is also principal investigator on the Center of excellence for virus immunology and vaccines supported by the European Regional Development Fund. Over the years he received many prizes for his achievements in the field and held many executive positions within the University of Rijeka. In 2012 he became a member of German National Academy of Sciences – Leopoldina.
