Liwei Lu graduated in Medicine from Jiangsu University and received his PhD at McGill University. After completing his postdoctoral research at University of Toronto, he joined The University of Hong Kong and is currently Professor of Immunology at Department of Pathology.
His research has focused on studying immune dysregulations in autoimmune diseases. He has published over 140 peer-reviewed papers in leading immunology and rheumatology journals. He has served as Chairman of Hong Kong Society for Immunology and Councilor, Federation of Immunological Societies of Asia-Oceania. His research achievements have been recognized with numerous awards including David Rae Memorial Award, Leukemia Research Fund of Canada in 2000, Medical Faculty Teaching Medal in 2008, Croucher Senior Research Fellowship Award in 2012, University Outstanding Researcher Award in 2013, Beijing Science and Technology in 2015 and China Medical Science and Technology Award in 2018.
