Barbara Bohle has studied “Food- and Biotechnology” at the University of Natural Resources and Applied Life Sciences in Vienna after working as a Medical Technical Assistant in the team of Prof. Dietrich Kraft at the Institute of Experimental Pathology, University of Vienna, Austria, for 5 years. In 2000 she received her PhD and in 2002 the Venia docendi in Immunology. Since then she leads the research group “Allergy Research” at the Department of Pathophysiology and Allergy Research at the Medical University of Vienna. In 2010 she was appointed a full professor for Cellular Allergology. Since 2011 she is the Head of the Institute of Pathophysiology and Allergy Research and the Division of Experimental Allergology. From 2007-2015 she led the Christian Doppler Laboratory for Immunomodulation.
The main focus of her scientific work is the characterization of the role of allergen-specific T lymphocytes and various types of antigen-processing cells in the pathophysiology of allergy. She is also highly interested in the elucidation of the mechanisms of secondary food allergy. Her work has markedly contributed to the understanding of the pathophysiology of pollen-related food allergy. and was awarded the Austrian Novartis Prize in Biology and the international awards of the Pharmacia Allergy Research Foundation (PhARF) and of the world allergy organization (WAO). She is currently working on the elucidation of mechanisms of allergic diseases and their cure, as well as on the introduction of new diagnostic and therapeutic concepts for allergy into clinical use.
Barbara Bohle has extended experience in academic teaching and congress organization. She has been the congress secretary of the Annual Congress of the European Academy of Allergy and Clinical Immunology (EAACI) in 2006 and the European congress of Immunology (ECI) in 2015 in Vienna, Austria, as well as the congress chair of the EAACI congress 2016 held in Vienna in June 2016 with almost 8000 participants. She served as board member for several national and international scientific organizations and societies. She was the treasurer of the Austrian Society for Allergology and Immunology (ÖGAI) from 2006-2010 and the president of the ÖGAI from 2016-2018. From 2005-2009 she served as Secretary of the Immunology Section of the European Academy of Allergology and Clinical Immunology (EAACI), followed by leading the section as chairperson from 2009-2011. From 2017-2019 she was the secretary of the EAACI Interest group for Food Allergy. She is a scientific board member of the Paul-Ehrlich Institute, Langen, Germany, and of the Josef Ressl Senat of the Christian Doppler Society in Vienna. Furthermore, she was the Editor-in-Chief for International Archives of Allergy and Immunology from 2013-2017.
Barbara Bohle is the author of >170 peer-reviewed scientific papers published in highly ranked journals in the field of allergy and immunology (h index = 45). She has also published >20 review articles and book contributions and gave more than 100 invited lectures.
