Allan Randrup Thomsen graduated as MD from the University of Copenhagen (UC) in 1980 following which he received a research fellowship to study viral immunology at Institute of Medical Microbiology, Faculty of Health, UC. Between 1984 and 86, he was senior research fellow and from 1986-90 associate professor,and during the latter period he spent time as visiting research assistant professor at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, USA. From 1990-2004 he served as assistant professor at Institute of Molecular Biology, the Science Faculty, UC. He became Doctor of Medical Sciences in 1992, and in 2004 he became full professor in Experimental Virology at Department of international Health, Immunology and Microbiology, Faculty of Health Sciences, UC. His research has been centered on primarily T cell mediated immunity to viral infections, and in recent years a focus area has been the development of vaccines and how vaccine induced immunity may work to prevent systemic as well as localized infections.
