Professor of Medicine and Immunology, Hannover Medical University School (MHH) is currently the Director of the Department of Medicine, and Director of the Division of Clinical Immunology and Rheumatology. After studying medicine and psychology at the University of Bonn he was trained in internal medicine, rheumatology and immunology in Bonn, Salt Lake City, Royal Postgraduate Medical School, London. In 1995 her was appointed full professor and Director of the Department of Clinical Immunology and Rheumatology at the Medical University Hannover (MHH). Since 2003 he also is the Director of the Jeffrey Modell Center (JMF) for Diagnostics and Therapy of Immunodeficiency at MHH. He served as President of the German Society of Immunology (DGfI), in the board of the European Federation of Immunological Societies (EFIS), is currently the chairman of the advisory board of the Paul-Ehrlich-Institute and the scientific advisory board of Ministry of Health in Germany. Since 2017 he is President of the Board of Trustees of the German Rheumatology Research Center (DRFZ), Berlin. He received various adwards like the Rudolph Schön Award, the Jan Brod Award, and the Dr. Joachim Hilfenhaus award. He is also a member of the National Academy of Science in Germany “Leopoldina”.
His research focus is on innate immunity, inflammatory mechanisms, autoimmunity, and on genetics and pathogenesis of immunodeficiencies. Moreover he is involved in numerous studies for treatment of autoimmune diseases as well as primary immunodeficiencies.
